Only Two Days to Go

With only two days to go before the big day there has been plenty of last-minute activity.  Final arrangements have been made to ensure that our panel of antiques valuers are ready, signage is organised, the sound system in place, activities are ready to run, The Breeze will be there, and traffic management plans are ready to roll.

Sunday 28 March will be a very busy day along Lake Road.  At 9.00am some 8,000 kids will be released from the upper fields at Takapuna Grammar School for the Shore to Shore Fun Run to Milford.  Later in the morning they will return to the area with their parents to collect cars, and hopefully visit the Wilson Home Antiques Road Show and Family Fun Day.  Lake Road will also be busy with people heading to the Bikers’ Day Out at Fort Takapuna so visitors to the Wilson Home Fair should expect some congestion and delays.

Remember, all adults paying the $2 entry donation to the Wilson Home Antiques Road Show and Family Fun Day are automatically in the draw at 3.30pm for the 7 day holiday for two on Queensland’s Gold Coast, but you have to be present at the draw to collect the prize, or it will be redrawn.  Conditions for the draw are as follows:

  1. Each entrance ticket will entitle one entry into a prize draw which will take place on 28 March 2010 at 3.30pm at the Harvey World Travel tent. The first entry drawn where the ticket holder is present will be the winner.
  2. The prize is a 7 day Gold Coast Holiday for two staying at the Breakfree Beachpoint apartments with return economy airfares and all prepaid airport taxes to the value of $1500.00. All other expenses are the sole responsibility of the winner. The winner and their companion must travel together and are responsible for obtaining all necessary visas and valid passports for travel. The prize must be redeemed by 31 October 2010.
  3. The prize is non-transferable, non-refundable and can not be exchanged for cash. The prize is subject to availability at time of booking. The winner must book their travel directly with Harvey World Travel, Milford.
  4. By entering the prize draw each entrant agrees to be bound by these terms and conditions.

As you will appreciate, parking will be at a premium, so please be considerate.  Parking will be available for a donation of $5 in the Takapuna Grammar Grounds . Lake Road entrance from 11.00 am.

It looks as though the weather will be fine, so bring your antiques and children and enjoy the fun of the fair.

Retired Fire Engine on Show for Kids

Kids will be able to climb aboard a retired 1972 Fire Truck at the Wilson Home Family Fun Day and Antiques Road Show this weekend at The Wilson Home Gardens in Lake Rad Takapuna, next to Takapuna Grammar School.

The gate will open at 11.ooam to allow the 8,000 participants in the Shore to Shore Fun Run to pass the gate on their way to Milford.

Not only will kids be able to climb aboard, they will also be able to have their photographs taken while acting out their fantasies of bravery as they sit in the cab or stand on the rear platform.

The fire truck is owned by Takapuna North Rotarian Bill Grieve who has plans for restoring it to its former glory.

The day offers a fun day out for all the family.  While parents  and other adults get their family antique treasures assessed by experts, kids will be able to ride the merry-go-round, shoot down the Big Slide, leap in the Bouncy Castle, visit the animal farm, get their faces painted, decorate a wall plaque, and much more.

All funds raised will be donated to The Wilson Home Trust for Children with Disabilities and selected Rotary community projects.

Funds raised to be targeted for Specialist Equipment and Activities for Children with Disabilities

According to Russell Ness, Director of the Wilson Centre for Children with Disabilities, there is a need for in excess of $100,000 to fund the planned programme of special equipment purchases and activities in the next 12 months.

Funds raised from the Antiques Road Show and Family Fun Day on Sunday 28 March, which is being jointly organised to the Rotary Clubs of Takapuna North and Milford for The Wilson Home Trust, will help to close this gap.

Some of the projects in the planned programme include:

  • Purchase of multi-sensory play items for playground use by children with a wide range of impaired faculties, such as blindness, mobility problems, or mental disabilities;
  • A sensory trail through The Wilson Centre’s grounds to enhance the enjoyment of all children in the care of the Centre;
  • An increase range of creative programmes in art, music, drama that involve as wide a range as possible of children with disabilities;
  • Increased numbers of workshops for parents and carers on the best methods of helping children in their care, as well as coping strategies and practices for families with disabled children;
  • Improving the already successful Wellness Expo  held each year at the North Shore Event Centre to raise awareness of disability issues with children, and facilitate improved information and resource knowledge on disability issues in the community.

A key fund raiser on the day will be the Antiques Road Show.  Visitors are asked to bring no more than two family treasure items to be assessed by an expert panel of antiques experts for a donation of $10.  A closed circuit video will show the experts at work while people wait to have their items assessed and will be able to listen in on comments made by the experts by way of an audio feed.

At other fund-raising activities kids will be able to zoom down the Big Slide, jump in the Bouncy Castle and ride the merry-go-round or ferris wheel.  There will be plate smashing and coconut shies stalls for those wanting to demonstrate their accurate ball throwing skills, as well as a Ride-on  Challenge area where balancing skills can be tested on uni-cycles and pogo sticks. There will also be an old fire engine for kids to clamber over and have their photographs taken.

A feature for this year’s event is a Kids’ Arts and Crafts area where tutors from the Lake House Arts Centre in Takapuna will help children create their own sculptures out of ceramic clay, cardboard, recycled materials, tin cans, plastic bottles and items from nature like driftwood, stones and shells as well as adding 3D effects to paintings and drawings.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to The Wilson Home Trust for Children with Disabilities and selected Rotary community projects.
